Warning Signs

Signs a Breaker Is Going Bad

A breaker that trips is doing its job. A breaker that fails can stop doing it. Not sure why yours keeps tripping? Our guide on why a breaker keeps tripping walks through the safe checks you can do first.

Call now

Turn off what is on it and call today

  • Will not reset

It snaps back off right away, or the handle feels loose and mushy.

  • Hot to the touch

Slightly warm can be normal. Hot means a loose connection or a failing breaker.

  • Burning smell

A sharp, plastic smell near the panel means something is overheating.

  • Buzzing or crackling

A steady hum or crackle from one breaker points to arcing inside.

  • Trips again and again

Once in a while is normal. Every day, or every time one thing runs, is not.

  • Scorch marks or rust

Brown marks, melted plastic or rust on the breaker or the panel.

Find the Cause

Is It the Breaker or the Circuit?

A new breaker will not fix a problem on the wire. What happens when you reset it tells a lot. Pick the one that sounds like yours.

Likely cause

Short circuit

What it means

A hot wire is touching a neutral or ground somewhere on the circuit, in a device, an outlet or the wall.

What to do

Leave it off and unplug everything on that circuit. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, call us.

Likely cause

Overloaded circuit

What it means

Too much is running on one circuit. Space heaters, hair dryers and window AC units are common culprits.

What to do

Move a big appliance to another circuit. If you need the power there, a new circuit is the real fix.

Likely cause

Failed breaker or a dead short

What it means

The breaker may be worn out inside, or a fault on the circuit is too severe to hold.

What to do

Do not keep forcing it. Call us to test the breaker and the circuit.

Likely cause

Ground fault or a worn breaker

What it means

Moisture in an outdoor outlet or box, or an aging breaker that trips below its rating.

What to do

Check outdoor outlets and covers. If it keeps happening, we test the breaker and the wiring.

Your Options

Repair or Replace: What Each Means

We tell you which fix you need, and why, before any work starts. If your panel is the problem, our electrical panel upgrades page explains the next step.

Electrician removing a breaker from an electrical panel
  1. Option 1

    Smallest fix

    Repairing the Connection

Sometimes the breaker is fine and the wire on it is loose or burned. We cut back the damaged wire, tighten it to spec and check the panel bus.

  2. Option 3

    Bigger job

    When the Panel Needs Replacing

Burned bus bars, rust, a panel with known problems or one with no room left. Then a breaker swap is a patch, and the panel should go.

Breaker Types

Breaker Types We Install in Durham Homes

Not every breaker does the same job. As a licensed electrician in Durham, NC, we install every common type. Many older homes have only standard breakers. Upgrading to AFCI or GFCI breakers adds protection that newer homes are built with.

TypeWhere it is usedWhat it protects against
Single Pole120V circuits for lights and outletsOverloads and short circuits
Double Pole240V circuits for dryers, ranges, AC and EV chargersOverloads and short circuits
AFCIBedrooms, living areas and most rooms in newer codeArcing from damaged cords and loose wires
GFCIBathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, poolsShock from current leaking to ground
Dual FunctionKitchens and laundry rooms where code calls for bothArcing and shock in one breaker

Older Homes

Problem Panels in Older Durham Homes

Some panels from the 1950s to the 1980s are known for breakers that may not trip during a fault. Many Durham homes from those years still have one. If yours does, replacing a breaker does not fix the risk. We recommend replacing the panel.

1950s to 1980s

Federal Pacific Stab-Lok

Breakers have a long record of failing to trip when they should. They also fit loosely on the bus.

1960s and 1970s

Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco

Breakers can melt onto the bus bar and stay on during a fault.

The Right Breaker for the Panel

Every panel takes breakers made or approved for it. A breaker that "fits" but is not listed for your panel can arc and overheat.

  • Square D, Siemens, Eaton, GE and more
  • Bus checked before the new one goes in

FAQ

Breaker FAQs

Not sure if it is the breaker or the circuit? Call and tell us what it is doing, and we will tell you what comes next.

Call (984) 271-2113

How long does a circuit breaker last?

Many last 30 years or more. Heat, frequent trips, loose connections and moisture wear them out sooner. A breaker that trips more often than it used to may be getting weak.

Can I replace a breaker myself?

We do not recommend it. The main lugs and service wires stay live even with the main breaker off. A mistake can cause a shock, a fire or a breaker that will not protect the circuit.

Can any breaker go in my panel?

No. Each panel takes breakers made or approved for it. A breaker that only looks like it fits can arc against the bus bar. We install only breakers approved for your panel.

Why is my breaker hot?

A breaker on a busy circuit can feel a little warm. One that is hot to the touch usually has a loose wire, a failing contact or too much load. Turn off what is on that circuit and call us.

Why does my AFCI breaker keep tripping?

AFCI breakers trip when they sense arcing. Common causes are a damaged cord, a loose outlet, a nail through a wire, or a few motors and vacuums. We find the cause instead of swapping in a standard breaker.

Can you come out at night for a breaker problem?

Yes. A breaker that is hot, smoking or smells like burning is an emergency, and our line is open 24/7.

What does a breaker replacement cost?

It depends on the breaker type, your panel brand and whether the wire or panel needs work too. AFCI and GFCI breakers cost more than standard ones. You get a price before we start.

Do you replace breakers for businesses?

Yes. We replace breakers and check panels in offices, shops and restaurants, and we can work before or after business hours.
