The Mill Village

Old West Durham's Mill Houses

Erwin Cotton Mills opened in 1893, and rows of houses for its workers went up beside it. By 1900 there were 440 of them. In the 1940s the mill began selling the houses to the families who lived in them. Many still stand on deep, narrow lots along the streets near Ninth Street.

Houses this old were built in the knob and tube era, with only a few circuits and no ground wire. So before we plan any work, we check what each house has. That first look is part of every visit from your local electrician in Durham, NC.

The three mill house plans

  1. Plan 01

    Pyramid Roof

A square house under a roof that rises to a point. Small rooms around a center, close to the street.

  2. Plan 02

    L-Shaped

A front room that juts toward the street, with the rest of the house set back behind it.

  3. Plan 03

    T-Shaped

A front wing with rooms behind it that form a T, often with a porch tucked into a corner.

More Power

Small Houses, Bigger Loads Today

A mill house was wired for a few lights and not much else. Older homes like these often started with 60 amp service. Today the same house may run central air, a heat pump, an EV charger and a home office.

Before you add any of these, we add up what the house already uses. If the panel or service is too small, we handle the electrical panel upgrade so the new load runs safely.

  • 240V
Heat pump or central airIts own 240 volt circuit and room in the panel
  • 240V

  • 240V

  • New circuits

Ninth Street, Then and Now

Historic Status

What the Historic District Means for Your Project

Part of the neighborhood, around Ninth Street and West Main Street, is the West Durham Historic District. That district is smaller than the whole neighborhood. Because it is not a Durham local historic district, outside changes do not need the city's design approval. Electrical work still needs the normal permit, and we pull it for you.

FAQ

Old West Durham Electrical FAQs

Own a mill house or a rental here? Describe the problem or the project, and we will tell you what kind of visit it needs.

Call (984) 271-2113

Does my mill house still have knob and tube wiring?

It might. Houses built in the 1890s and early 1900s were wired that way, but many have been updated since. We check what your house has before we suggest any work.

Can a small mill house run central air and an EV charger?

Often, yes, once the panel and service are big enough. We add up the load first and tell you if an upgrade is needed.

Is Old West Durham a local historic district?

No. Part of it is the West Durham Historic District on the National Register, but it is not a Durham local historic district, so outside changes do not need city design approval.

Do you work on rental houses near Duke?

Yes. Landlords and property managers near Ninth Street call us for repairs and for safety checks when a lease turns over.

Can I swap two-prong outlets for three-prong ones?

Not by just changing the outlet. A three-prong outlet needs a ground behind it, or GFCI protection where code allows. We check and recommend the right fix.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. Panel swaps and new circuits need a permit from the city. We take care of the paperwork and the inspection visit.
