The Neighborhood

Built, Split Up and Brought Back

Old North Durham sits just north of downtown, with Mangum and Roxboro Streets running through it. Its houses have lived three lives, and each one left its mark on the wiring. Any licensed electrician in Durham, NC working here learns that all three can show up in the same house.

  1. Built

    1880s to 1930s

Houses spread north from downtown. A trolley opened on North Mangum Street in 1901, and Brodie Duke began selling lots the same year. Bungalows and revival houses followed into the 1930s.

  2. Hard Years

    Late 1950s to 1990s

Families moved to the suburbs. Big houses were split into apartments, some were torn down, and Mangum Street became one-way in the 1960s.

  3. Revival

    Late 1990s on

Owners bought and restored houses along North Mangum. By the mid-2000s it was one of the most wanted neighborhoods close to downtown.

Restorations

Restoring a House From the Inside Out

Most houses here date from the 1890s to the 1930s, so many were wired in the knob and tube years and changed again and again since. A restoration is the best chance to replace what is left. Our house wiring and rewiring work is built for jobs like this.

Undo the Apartment Years

Houses that were split into units can carry extra meters, odd circuits and splices hidden behind patched walls. Turning one back into a single home is a good time to sort the wiring out.

Plan Wiring Before the Plaster Work

If walls are coming open for repairs, run new wiring then. It saves cutting into finished plaster later.

Keep Records for Tax Credits

Open Durham notes that the National Register status here brings renovation tax breaks, with no city design review. If you plan to apply, keep your permits and invoices, and check the rules before the work starts.

Room by Room

A Walk Through an Old North Durham House

Most houses here date from the 1890s to the 1930s. When we walk through one, these are the spots we check, from the porch to the basement.

  1. Stop 01

    Front Porch

    What we check

An old fixture box, a cracked outlet or wiring left from a past repair.

  2. Stop 02

    Front Rooms

    What we check

Too few outlets, so cords run along the walls. Ceiling lights on old boxes.

  3. Stop 03

    Kitchen

    What we check

Counter outlets without GFCI protection and appliances sharing one circuit.

  4. Stop 04

    Bathroom

    What we check

An outlet without GFCI protection, or no fan on its own switch.

  5. Stop 05

    Attic

    What we check

Old knob and tube runs, sometimes buried under insulation.

  6. Stop 06

    Basement

    What we check

The panel, old fuses, and splices left behind by past owners.

Old and New

Old Houses and New Infill on the Same Blocks

After World War II, newer homes filled empty lots, and infill has kept coming since. A 1910s bungalow can sit next to a much newer house. The two need very different things from an electrician. Before adding an EV charger or other big load to either, we check the panel, and handle the panel upgrade if it needs one.

Close by: Durham Central Park and its Saturday farmers market, and the Durham Athletic Park, built in 1939.

Why Choose Us

Why Old North Durham Calls Brian Electric

Restoring a house here means dealing with three eras of wiring at once. This is how we handle it.

  1. We Sort Out the Apartment Years

Extra meters, odd circuits and splices behind patched walls are traced and cleaned up when a house goes back to one home.

  2. Rewiring Timed With Your Plaster Work

We run new wire while the walls are open, so finished plaster does not get cut twice.

  3. A Walk Through, Porch to Basement

We check each spot older houses here tend to have trouble, and give you a plan in the order it makes sense.

  4. Old Houses and New Infill Alike

A 1910s bungalow and a newer house next door need different things. We check the panel before any big new load.

  5. Permits Pulled and Paperwork Kept

We pull the permit and meet the inspector. You get the paperwork for your records, which helps if you apply for tax credits.

  6. A 24/7 Line When It Cannot Wait

A burning smell or a dead circuit in an old house is worth a call any hour.

Call (984) 271-2113

Is Old North Durham a local historic district?

No. Part of it is on the National Register, but it is not one of Durham's local historic districts, so there is no city design review. Electrical work still needs a permit.

My house used to be apartments. What should I check?

Extra meters, circuits that cross between old units and splices left behind patched walls. Turning it back into one home is a good time to sort the wiring out.

When is the best time to rewire during a restoration?

While walls and ceilings are open for other repairs. It costs less and saves cutting into finished plaster later.

Can my older house handle an EV charger?

Sometimes. We check the panel and the load first. If there is not enough room, we can upgrade the panel.

Do you work on newer infill homes too?

Yes. We add EV chargers, lighting, smart switches and more circuits in newer homes as well as older ones.

Do you pull the permit?

Yes. A restoration rewire or panel change needs a city permit. We handle it from application to final inspection.
