Outlet and Switch Problems We Fix at Businesses

Outlets and switches at work get used far more than the ones at home. Here are the problems a licensed electrician in Durham, NC sees most, and how we fix each one. A burning smell or a hot cover is urgent, and our emergency line is open 24/7.

  • An outlet is dead, but the breaker is on

    1. Usual cause

A loose wire at this outlet or one before it, or a tripped GFCI upstream

    2. What we do

Trace the circuit, then tighten or replace the bad connection

  • Plugs fall out or feel loose

    1. Usual cause

Worn contacts inside the outlet after years of use

    2. What we do

Replace it with a commercial grade outlet that grips tight

  • Urgent

The cover is warm, brown or melted

    1. Usual cause

A loose connection heating up, or too much load on one outlet

    2. What we do

Replace the outlet and check the wire and the load behind it

  • Urgent

A burning smell near an outlet or switch

    1. Usual cause

Wire or plastic overheating inside the box

    2. What we do

Shut that circuit off and call us right away

  • A switch buzzes, sparks or feels hot

    1. Usual cause

A worn switch or a dimmer carrying more lights than it is rated for

    2. What we do

Replace it with a switch or dimmer sized for the load

  • Lights flicker when you touch the switch

    1. Usual cause

A loose wire at the switch or a worn-out switch

    2. What we do

Remake the connections and replace the switch

Parts We Use

Commercial Grade vs Store-Bought Outlets and Switches

What Makes a Device Commercial Grade

There is no single rule for the label, but commercial grade outlets and switches share a few traits. They connect with screws instead of a push-in hole, and the parts inside are heavier. They cost a little more and last much longer.

Where It Pays Off

An outlet behind a register or a switch in a busy hallway gets used hundreds of times a week. A cheap one wears out fast, and plugs start to fall out. That is where we put commercial grade devices.

Store-bought

  • Wire connection

Often a push-in hole on the back

  • Contacts inside

Thinner metal that loosens with use

  • Body

    Lighter plastic

  • Best for

    Rooms that see light use

Commercial grade What we use

  • Wire connection

Screw terminals or clamps that hold the wire tight

  • Contacts inside

Heavier contacts that keep gripping the plug

  • Body

Tougher body made for daily use

  • Best for

Desks, registers, kitchens and break rooms

Outlet Installation

Outlets for How Your Business Works

The right outlet depends on what plugs into it and who is around it. Outlets near sinks, in restrooms and outdoors need GFCI protection, which our commercial GFCI outlet page covers.

  • Open offices

    Floor Outlets for Open Offices

Desks in the middle of a room need power without cords across the floor. We install floor boxes rated for the floor and the cleaning that comes with it.

  • Machines and freezers

    Locking Outlets for Equipment

Twist-lock outlets hold the plug in place, so a bumped cord does not shut off a machine, a display or a freezer.

  • Kitchens and shops

240 Volt Outlets for Kitchen and Shop Equipment

Ovens, fryers, compressors and shop tools often need a 240 volt outlet that matches the plug on the machine.

  • Lobbies and waiting rooms

    USB and Charging Outlets

Outlets with built-in USB ports in lobbies, waiting rooms and offices, so visitors and staff can charge a phone without an adapter.

  • Child care and clinics

Tamper-Resistant Outlets Where Kids and Patients Wait

Child care centers, schools, clinic and medical office waiting rooms and assisted living need outlets with built-in shutters. We fit them where code calls for them.

Switches

Switches, Dimmers and Sensors for Business Spaces

A switch should be easy to find and do exactly what staff expect. We install and replace switches in offices, shops and restaurants, and match each one to the lights it controls.

Dimmers for Dining Rooms and Showrooms

Lower the lights for dinner service or set the mood on a sales floor. We match the dimmer to your fixtures, so LED lights do not flicker or hum.

Occupancy Sensor Switches

In restrooms, break rooms and storage rooms, a sensor switch turns the lights on when someone walks in and off when the room is empty.

Three-Way Switches for Halls and Stairs

Control the same lights from both ends of a hallway or the top and bottom of a stair, so nobody walks in the dark.

Layout Changes

Moving Outlets When Your Layout Changes

Need the same work at your house? See our home outlet and switch repair page.

New Desks, New Outlet Spots

When desks, registers or displays move, the outlets should move with them. We move or add outlets so cords do not stretch across walkways. If the new spots need a new circuit, our commercial wiring work runs it.

Replacing Every Outlet and Switch at Once

Worn, yellowed or mismatched outlets make a space look tired and fail one by one. We can replace them all in one visit, before you open or after you close. Nights and weekends cost the same as a weekday.

Why Choose Us

Why Businesses Trust Us With Outlets and Switches

Outlets and switches look simple, but at a business they take a beating every day. We pick parts that hold up and put each one where it does its job.

  • Commercial Grade Parts

We use spec grade outlets and switches with screw terminals, so plugs stay tight and switches last.

  • The Right Outlet for Each Spot

Floor boxes for open offices, twist-lock for equipment, USB in lobbies and 240 volt for kitchen gear.

  • GFCI Where Code Calls for It

Near sinks, in restrooms and outdoors, we install GFCI protection so the work passes inspection.

  • Sensor Switches That Save Power

Occupancy sensors in restrooms, break rooms and storage rooms turn the lights off when nobody is there.

  • Burned Outlets Treated as Urgent

A warm or burned outlet is a fire risk. Our 24/7 line covers it, and we check the wire behind it, not just the outlet.

  • Work Around Your Hours

We can come before you open or after you close. Nights and weekends cost the same as a weekday.

FAQ

Commercial Outlet and Switch FAQs

Outlet dead, loose or warm? Call and tell us what you see, and we will tell you what kind of visit you need.

Call (984) 271-2113

Why is our outlet warm?

A warm outlet usually means a loose connection or too much plugged into it. Unplug what you can and do not use it. If it is hot, smells or looks brown, shut off the breaker and call us.

Why do plugs fall out of our outlets?

The contacts inside the outlet have worn out. It needs to be replaced. A loose plug can heat up, so it is worth fixing soon.

What is a commercial grade outlet?

An outlet built for heavy daily use. It connects with screws instead of a push-in hole and has heavier contacts inside, so plugs stay tight for longer.

Do we need tamper-resistant outlets?

In some places, yes. Child care centers, schools, clinic and medical office waiting rooms and assisted living need them. We tell you if your space does.

Can you add outlets without closing our business?

Yes. We can work before you open, after you close or one area at a time, so you stay open.

Do outlet and switch jobs need a permit?

Swapping a worn outlet or switch for a new one usually does not. New outlets, new circuits and floor outlets usually do. We pull the permit when one is required and schedule the inspection.
