Electrical work is more complicated and dangerous than many people realize. Even simple projects can benefit from a professional electrician’s touch, while the complicated projects should always have an electrician completing them! Whether you fall in the former category or the latter, hiring an electrician is an important task that should be carefully considered. If you are in the process of hiring an electrician, here are a few questions that you can ask them before making your final decision.
- “How much experience do you have doing this type of work?” While there are many talented electricians out there with less experience, experience is a good indicator of the quality of electrician you’re getting. Ask about the experience of who will be doing the work on your home, as this can vary.
- “Do you have your electrician’s license?” An electrician’s license is not easily obtained! It requires a lot of work and schooling. An electrician’s license is a great indicator of a trustworthy and seasoned electrician.
- “Does this job require a permit?” Sometimes a job doesn’t require getting a permit, but the more extensive jobs, such as re-wiring an electrical panel to accommodate new appliances, can require a permit in many cases. Make sure you know if you or the electrician will be pulling the permit.
- “How many times have you done (insert your electrical project here)?” Just like some bakers prefer cakes while others prefer breads, electricians have their specialties, too. If your electrician is an experienced one, but has only done what you need done once or twice, you might want to reconsider.
